Sports Massage
What is a Sports Massage?
Sports massage involves the manipulation and mobilisation of muscles and soft tissues for pain relief, muscle repair, health maintenance and injury prevention. Many people assume that sports massage is only for people that regularly practice sport, but it also works wonders in helping inactive people release painful tension and recover flexibility & movement.
A Sports Massage targets many injuries brought on by overuse of certain muscles, whether from repetitive movements as part of your training or poor posture through sitting sedentary which can result in soreness, pain and inflammation. Sports Massage or soft tissue massage is an ideal way to rehabilitate the soft tissues in the body including muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Sports Massage is much more specific than a deep tissue massage and treats more complex ailments. The aim is to work at the injury site or surrounding area.
There are many reasons why people chose to have a Sports Massage, you may have on going shoulder pain, a tight tense back or neck pain or sustained a recent injury. It is ideal for sudden injury such as a hamstring strain or shoulder injury and also for long-term injury such as neck or low back pain. It is also highly beneficial in reducing pain and discomfort in conditions such as whiplash, after a fall or an injury.

What conditions can it treat?
Sports massage was originally designed for athletes; however it has proven to be extremely effective in treating chronic pain problems such as stiff necks, strained or twisted shoulder muscles, and lower back stiffness or pain.
Sports Massage can help many issues such as knee injuries, piriformis syndrome, frozen shoulder, tennis & golfer’s elbow, rotator cuff injuries, IT band syndrome, ankle sprains, Achilles’ tendon problems and carpal tunnel problems.
Pain can affect the body at any time whether it be acute or slow onset. Sports Massage can relieve pain in several ways including relaxing muscles, tendons, joints, relieving stress and anxiety, and navigating neurological pain away from the affected area.
Sports Massage can reduce recovery rate by increasing oxygen and nutrients to the affected muscles. Massage can also promote healing of the body through lymphatic drainage which helps to remove toxins or waste and reduce any excessive swelling associated with injury. Friction techniques can also help to align new collagen formation within the muscle which can lead to improved realignment of scar tissue and a reduction of risk of further injury.

How does it feel during the treatment?
Trained therapists may use their hands, fingertips, knuckles even elbows, to effectively release areas of tension. A sports massage will be more focused on a specific or problematic area in your body. On occasion you may be asked to take a deep breath to help you to relax.

This deeper style of massage may sometimes cause DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) during, or in the days following the massage. This is simply the muscles releasing stored tension and toxins and will fade within a few days.
Sometimes a Sports Massage can feel uncomfortable, but in a good way and it will work. Due the nature of a Sports Massage, you will be asked to remove clothing down to your underwear and you will be fully draped/covered accordingly only ever exposing the areas needing massaged. Clients will always have a screen to get changed behind.
It is important to feel in control of the pain level you can always cope with so you will have the freedom to let your therapist know if the pressure is ok or needs adjusting.

How will it feel after the treatment?
You will be advised to drink lots of water before and after a Sports Massage, and rest accordingly. It is very important to let your body recover, and no excessive exercise should be carried out until at least 48hrs after your treatment. You may occasionally have some bruising or tenderness, and this is completely normal.
